The Warri Diocesan Council of Catholic Women Organization made another landmark as they rolled out the drums for their maiden Girl Child Holiday/ Empowerment programme with the theme: The Dignity of the Catholic Girl Child.
The Sub-themes were:
(i) Â The Girl Child and her rights.
(ii) The Challenges Of growing up as a Girl Child in contemporary Nigeria.
The Mission of the programme is to groom the Girl Child towards building the C.W.O of the future. It also has the vision to:
a. Â bring adolescent Catholic Girls closer to God
b. Â assist Catholic Girls to understand, appreciate and proudly identify with the doctrines of the Catholic faith.
c. Â Groom the Girl Child to become good home managers
d. Â Help the Girl Child attain her fullest potentials
e. Â Guide the Girl Child into making appropriate career choices.
f. Â Help the indigent child
g. Â Foster love, unity and social skills.
The synergy to realize the above, saw 72 Catholic girls (mainly 14-20years of age), from all the 7 deaneries participating in a 4day activity packed programme anchored by the Diocesan President Lady Fidelia Akusu(KSJ) and all members of the Planning Committee.
It was a fulfilled weekend for the daughters(potential CWO) and the mothers of the church.(CWO) as they enjoyed the serene atmosphere of Our Lady of Nigeria Secondary School Oghara, Delta state, which was the venue for the 4day seminar.
The programme started on Thursday 16th-19th august 2012 with a penitential service handled by Very Rev.Fr Clement Ejedegba, the Host Parish Priest. Friday 17th August 2012 marked the grand Opening Ceremony which started with the Mass. During the 1st plenary session, Chief.Barr(Mrs) Elizabeth Okene and Chief Hon. Engr Emmanuel Ighomena spoke on the sub themes respectively. Mrs. Joy Enebeli with very practical examples taught the girls the dangers of pre-marital sex and abortion. The girls were also trained by other resource persons, to become big time entrepreneurs, job providers and not job seekers, as they were taught skills in the production of body cream/ lotion, perfume and face powder, baking and confectionaries, tying of head ties/ dressing. Mrs Esifiho a Guidance Counselor spoke on career choice.
The Girl Child holiday/ empowerment programme rounded up with a gala night, which featured side attractions such as cultural displays. Before the final assembly and reading of resolutions, there was a thanksgiving Mass. To God be the glory, this maiden holiday programme was a huge success.
