The Catholic bishop of Ikot Ekpene Most Rev. Camillus Umoh has urged Catholic Communicators to transcend all cultural boundaries in the proclamation of God’s mercy. Delivering the homily on Tuesday October 13, 2015 at the Holy Mass to mark the opening of the Plenary for the National Catholic Communications Directors which began at 6am at the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, Ikot Ekpene, the bishop represented by Rev. Fr. Prof. John Oscar Umoh, said that divine salvation has a universal character since God does not discriminate and has no favourite (Rm 2:11). He affirmed that the choice of the theme “Communicating God’s Mercy in Multicultural Society” is apt and timely.
He further drew the attention of the communications directors, who had gathered from the various parts of the country, to the “urgent need to transcend various cultural boundaries in order to unfold the richness of God’s mercy as engrained in the Good News which is always good and new.” Drawing on the Communique of the Catholic Bishops Conference of Nigeria at the end of their Second Plenary held in Port Harcourt from September 10 -18, 2015, the Preacher reiterated that to guarantee sustainable success in Nigeria, there is need for Nigerians especially the communicators of God’s mercy, to transcend ethnic, religious and regional affiliations and sentiments. Without playing down its efficacy, they are to make the message of God’s mercy relevant in the contemporary setting regardless of the different cultural distinctiveness. This, he said, means insisting on the truth irrespective of the culture being addressed.
