The Catholic bishop of Awka Diocese, His Lordship, Most Rev. Paulinus Ezeokafor, has appealed to the Federal Government to appoint service chiefs based on merit rather than ethnic or religious considerations.
He said for the country to get its security system right and ensure maximum security of life and property, those charged with such responsibilities should be diligent and not compromise security standards for mundane reasons.
Bishop Ezeokafor who stated this at St. Patrick’s Catholic Cathedral, Awka, while fielding questions from newsmen, emphasized that the primary duty of government was to protect life and property, insisting that any government that failed to execute such responsibility was worthless.
He said security of life and property should not be sacrificed on the altar of nepotism, favouritism and religion and advised the government to ensure that the right persons were chosen when it was time to appoint new service chiefs.
Bishop Ezeokafor commended the Governor Willie Obiano-led administration for the security architecture put in place in Anambra State, describing it as the best in the country.
The Catholic prelate urged other states to borrow a leaf from Anambra State and ensure that adequate security was put in place in their respective domains.
