…As Catholics Celebrates World Communications Day

By Godwin-Maria Utuedoye,

The APC led Federal Government has been urged not to react to people’s suggestions or criticisms, but be open and work harmoniously with all for growth and development of the nation.

The charge was given by the Catholic Bishop of Warri Diocese, Most Rev. John OkeOghene Afareha during the celebration of the 55th World Day of Communications held at the Sacred Heart Cathedral Warri on Saturday, May 14, 2021.

Represented by the Vicar General of the diocese, Very Rev. Fr. (Col.) Retrd. Martin Akusu, the bishop reiterated the need for the government to accept others opinions and suggestions to ensuring the peaceful coexistence of the people.

He noted that both the family, religious institutions, politicians and everyone need to stand on the path of truth to salvage the country from the present quagmire of insecurity and gross criminal impunity.

In an interview with Journalists, the Diocesan Director of Communications, Very Rev. Fr. Thaddeus Okpowodu, urged the federal government to work harmoniously with people and shun being reactive to suggestions and criticism, but be opened and engage the masses in a sincere dialogue.

Speaking further, Very Rev. Fr. Thaddeus Okpowodu said the media has what it takes to save the country, insisting that whatever it says can either make or mar the society, adding that communication is sacrosanct to peaceful coexistence as God himself communicate with the people.

He said communication is everything, hence the theme of this year’s celebration is; “Come and See”, which he said, means, “You come, I come and we see, to interact and chat a peaceful path to progress.

He however appealed to the government to perform their duties effectively while the religious houses should as well preach peace, unity and love at all times.

“It is the duty of the government to secure the lives and properties of the people and as well ensure their safety.

“We encourage Journalists to always report the truth as factual reportage bring peace and unity, but the likes of reportage we had today, it is very difficult to know which is truth, but called on Catholic Journalists to set the pace.

“I am calling on Catholic media practitioners all over the country to write abd speak the truth, because it is only the truth that can salvage the situation we have found ourselves in this country”.

“I am charging the media to adhere to the tenets of the profession by standing on the side of truth. You must shelve the bad and ugly side even though the truth is bitter. Say the right thing and speak to your conscience.”
