Adhere to Professionalism in news reportage, Bishop Urges African Journalists

ABUJA, Missionary Newspaper, 01/07/2018- Episcopal Chairman for Communications, Catholic Bishop’s Conference of Nigeria CBCN, Most Rev. Dennis Isizoh has charged African Journalists to be factual and objective in their news reportage in order to transmit good values.

 

Bishop Isizoh gave this admonition on Friday June 29, 2018 while addressing delegates during the opening ceremony of the Strategic meeting of the Executive Delegates of SIGNIS Africa holding at the Catholic Secretariat of Nigeria Resource Centre,Abuja.

Most Rev. Isizoh while stressing the need for thorough investigation and truth in news reportage, noted also the importance of indepth investigation before going to press.

 

Adding that fake or false news could cause chaos and instability especially with the use of the social media.

 

He, however, appealed to African Journalists to uphold tenaciously the ethics of journalism and urged them to make postivie use of their mobile phones and other electronic gadgets that can be used to spread or transmit news items so that peace, stability and justice can be promoted through the job they do.

 

Earlier in his welcome address, the President of SIGNIS Africa, Rev. Fr.  Prof. Walter Ihejirika expressed his utmost commitment in moving SIGNIS to a higher level and welcomed delegates to the strategic meeting of the executive delegates of Signis.

Highlights of the meeting include goodwill messages from the Catholic Media Practioners of Nigeria CAMPAN, SECAM, RECOWA and CAEAN.

 

A minute silence was later observed for the repose of the soul of one of the executive members from Cote’d’Ivoire and the recent victims of Fulani Herdsmen massacre in Jos, Plateau State attack.

 

About nine countries including Nigeria attended the executive delegates meeting which ended yesterday in Abuja.
