Most Reverend Anthony Ovayero Ewherido

Most Reverend Anthony Ovayero Ewherido is the Bishop of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Warri, Nigeria. Born on October 8, 1960, in Delta State, he was ordained a priest in 1986 and has served in various pastoral roles. 

Most Reverend Anthony Ovayero Ewherido is the current Bishop of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Warri, Nigeria.

 

Born on October 8, 1960, in Eghwu, Ughelli South LGA of Delta State, he attended the Minor Seminary in Effurun and completed his philosophical and theological studies at Saints Peter and Paul Major Seminary in Ibadan, where he later became the rector.

 

Ewherido was awarded a doctorate degree in biblical studies at Saint John’s University and Fordham University in New York and obtained a diploma at the Pontifical Athenaeum Regina Apostolorum in Rome.

 

He was ordained a priest on October 18, 1986, and incardinated in the Diocese of Warri.

 

His pastoral journey included serving as:

  • Rector of the Holy Martyr’s of Uganda Minor Seminary, Effurun
  • Parish Priest of Various Churches
  • Chaplain at Stony Brook University Medical Center
  • Lecturer and Formator at the Saints Peter and Paul
  • Interdiocesan Major Seminary in Ibadan
  • Vice-Rector and Lecturer at the Dominican Institute in Samonda, Ibadan (2013 to 2021)

 

Ewherido has been the Rector of the Saints Peter and Paul interdiocesan Major Seminary since 2019.

 

On December 28, 2022, he was appointed Bishop of Warri diocese by Pope Francis, following the retirement of Bishop John Oke’Oghene Afareha, and was installed as Bishop on February 9, 2023.

 

His extensive experience and dedication to the Church have marked his path to this significant role within the Catholic community in Nigeria.
