August 29th Memorial of the Beheading of John the Baptist

Saint John's beheading

Jer. 1:17-19
Mk: 6: 17-29

Today Jesus gives us another parable, the parable of the Talent. In this parable, those who received ten talents made ten more as well as those who received five and two talents. But the one who received one talent stands out for his awkward behavior. He not only brought back the talent as he was given but also insulted the master. Among other things this servant seems not to know his place as a servant. He words and reaction suggests that he wants to be his own boss. Many things go wrong when people do not know their place or understand their responsibility. As Christians, we are servants of one master and the Lord has given us talents as he ascends on the journey to heaven. When he comes back, he will certainly ask what we have done with what he gave us. It is important to begin to ask ourselves this question even before the Lord asks us. As a priest, I have received so much in training and learning, and so much is expected of me, what do I have to show for it? As parents you have received so much in the Children you have and the responsibilities and gifts that you have received, what do you have to show for it? John the Baptist has his fidelity to the truth to show for the opportunities to show for what the Lord gave him. He not only spoke the truth, he died for it. This is indeed a challenge to our society that celebrates lies and falsehood. Through his intercession, may the Lord direct our lives in the path of Him who is the way the truth and the Life.
