August 27th Memorial of St. Monica

1Thess. 3:7-13
Mt 24: 42-51
In the first reading St. Paul speaks of his concern for the faith of the Thessalonians, giving thanks to God for them and praying for them earnestly. Today we celebrate the memorial of St. Monica, the mother of St. Augustine. And whenever her name is mentioned, one of the things that come to mind is her earnest prayers for the faith of her son Augustine. While the Thessalonians will grow in the faith and love of God, St. Augustine will be converted and later become a bishop and a great saint. Very often, we are tempted to be selfish with our prayers and even pray for the death of those we think are against us. The mother of St. Augustine challenges us with her life to pray often for those we know are not fervent in their faith and love of God. For in praying for others we strengthen our faith.
